The new museum
Welcome to the new museum!
Get to know the new building and hear the story of how the collection exhibition came together.
This route takes you from the Vestibule to the Light Hall. During the tour, we stop at selected rooms of the Collection, and we look at the architecture of the building.
Design and crafts from 1900 to the present
Wander through the 1st floor of the collection exhibition as you're introduced to selected works from the 1900s to the present.
We look at selected objects that have formed our surroundings: The kitchen we make food in, the cups we drink out of and the clothes we wear. Design plays a part in shaping how we perceive the world and how we in turn are perceived.
Learn more about how Norwegian crafts interacts with international trends and how history is used as a source of inspiration.
Older art
Join an introduction to selected artworks from 1500 to 1900 on the collection exhibition's 2nd floor.
Get to know some of the first artworks aquired for the museum collection in 1837. We take a closer look at Norwegian art from the 19th century and meet names like J.C. Dahl, Harriet Backer and Edvard Munch, but also lesser known artists. How are these artists relevant today?
Modern art
Get an introduction to selected artworks from 1900 to 1960 on the 2nd floor of the collection exhibition.
In this tour we take a closer look at how Norwegian and international artists made use of strong colors and a rougher depiction of the artwork's object, looking for new artistic expressions. The interwar period's reaction to war, the modernised world and the breakthrough of abstract art after the 2nd world war are also considered.
Contemporary art
Get an introduction to selected artworks from 1900 to 1960 on the 2nd floor of the collection exhibition.
In this tour we look at central trends in Norwegian contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. Get aquainted with the rise of political and activist art in the 1960s and 70s, and the conceptual art of the 2000s.
Architecture in the collection
Learn more about the history of architecture, and architects' relationship with visual arts and design, in selected rooms on the 1st and 2nd floor.
In this tour we look at the architect as a designer of holistic spaces for apartments and living. The tour concludes in the room dedicated to the architect Sverre Fehn.
