Sculpture

Sculpture conservators are responsible for the conservation and treatment of sculptures in the museum's collections, which include works ranging from antiquity to contemporary art.
They research materials and production methods to ensure the best conservation of works for future generations. For exhibitions and loans, they assess display and mounting options and document the condition of the works.
Sculpture conservation is primarily focused on, but not limited to, classical materials such as stone, plaster, and metals like bronze and iron, as well as their surface treatments.
A significant portion of the collection consists of around 800 plaster casts of sculptures dating from ancient Egypt up until the 19th century. The casts were purchased in 1881 for the newly established Sculpture Museum in order to make world art accessible to the public.
