The painting conservation team is responsible for the condition assessment, treatment and research of the museum's approximately 6,300 paintings, dating from the 15th century to the present day.

A large proportion of the museum's national and international loans consists of paintings. As a result, many of the museum's paintings are continuously on show in exhibitions in Norway and abroad.

The museum's paintings comprise materials such as oil, acrylic, alkyd, vinyl and tempera on canvas, cardboard and panel. An important part of the painting collection consists of 57 works by Edvard Munch (1863–1944), including the earliest versions of historically important motifs, such as The Scream (1893) and Madonna (1893–4).
