Frame conservation

Frame conservation requires in-depth knowledge of materials, traditional and modern techniques, as well as art history.
The museum's painting collection includes a wide range of historical frames made using different techniques and materials. An important aspect of the museum's interdisciplinary work is studying historical frame styles so that the style can be adapted to individual works. This helps ensure a cohesive visual presentation of the museum's framed works of art. Frame selection is made in consultation with the museum's curators.
Historical frames are treated as independent objects and are evaluated in the same way as the artworks they contain. As a specialised field, frame conservators work closely with frame technicians who specialise in producing custom solutions for particularly fragile artworks.
