In addition to pest control and ongoing maintenance, monitoring lighting and climate conditions is an important part of the museum's work. The conservation department works with the Norwegian government’s building commissioner to monitorclimate wherever art is housed in the National Museum: in exhibitions, storage areas, display cases, studios and external buildings.

The goal is to maintain stable temperature and relative humidity within defined parameters, while also balancing these factors against keeping energy consumption as low as possible. Conservation efforts contribute to the museum's sustainability strategy, which has the goal of reducing the museum's carbon footprint.
