Norway has had two queens since the union with Sweden was dissolved in 1905: Maud, during 1905–1938, and Sonja, starting in 1991. These are two women with different backgrounds in different epochs, yet with the same vocation. As wife to a reigning king in a modern monarchy, they enter into a symbolic role. The installations in Room 31 show how the two queens fill the role with content and personality, and how they communicate it through the clothing they wear.
