Between Art and Mass Communication: Edvard Munch and Printmaking
Welcome to the annual conference organized by the project "Munch and Modernity". It will take place on the 22nd of November, 08:30 AM - 06:00 PM in the Munch Museum and in the University of Oslo.
In 2013, the year of Edvard Munch’s 150th birthday, the Munch Museum will host an anniversary exhibition which is dedicated to Munch’s vast oeuvre of works on paper (“Munch on Paper”, opening 1st November 2013). Central to this exhibition is Munch’s activity as a printmaker: Beside presenting key images and their various techniques, the exhibition will also address Munch’s exploitation of printmaking as a medium of mass communication, touching, for example, on the concept of print portfolios such as “The Mirror.” It will also examine the instrumentalisation of the print market through Munch’s exhibition policy of prints, as well as his network of print collectors and dealers.
The aim of this conference is to investigate these important ideas in depth and to evaluate Munch’s achievement in the area of printmaking from various angles.
This is the third conference sponsored and organized by the “Munch and Modernity” research network at the University of Oslo, the Munch Museum, and the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo.
